With a Target Stick Clicker, you can teach a wide variety of behaviours and introduce new challenges, while its design effectively extends your reach – making it especially helpful when working with smaller pets.

What is a clicker?

A clicker is a small box with a metal strip inside. When you press it, it makes a distinctive “click” sound that signals a reward is coming.

It is an alternative to verbal praise – but more precise. It allows you to show your cat the exact moment it performed the desired behaviour.

A target stick helps with more precise exercises that require following an object, touching it with a paw, or nudging it with the nose.

You can also check out a finger clicker without a target stick.

Why train with a clicker?

  • Clicker training helps you develop new behaviours with your pet
  • It’s an alternative reward method that, over time, allows you to use fewer treats during training (which is especially useful for cats that need to lose weight)
  • It is based on positive reinforcement – rewarding the animal for correctly performing an action, which increases the likelihood that the behaviour will be repeated in the future
  • When used properly, it can also help eliminate unwanted behaviours (for example, jumping onto surfaces that are off-limits)
  • A clicker can also be used for medical and grooming training – such as brushing teeth, trimming claws, or getting into a carrier

How to start clicker training?

  • Introduce a signal for the beginning and end of training – for example, taking out a training mat
  • First and foremost, teach your cat that the click means a reward is coming: click = treat
  • Don’t click too often or too quickly
  • The pattern should be: click → reward → short pause
  • Maintain “training silence” (avoid unnecessary distractions or talking)
  • Practice in short sessions
  • Break each exercise into the smallest possible steps
  • Use your animal’s natural abilities and don’t push beyond its limits
  • Remember that every training session should end in success!
